Considering Blue Card training?

A traffic controller Blue Card is required for individuals employed to control traffic with a Stop/Slow sign. Courses offering this certification must be approved by the New South Wales Roads and Maritime Service (RMS), and are a vital part of maintaining Australia's traffic safety. Students wishing to undertake this training are required to hold a minimum Green P drivers license and the WorkCover White Card. The minimum license requirements are to ensure they have an understanding of traffic conditions and driving a vehicle. For persons who do not hold an Australian driver's license, foreign licenses are accepted but must verify they have been permitted to drive without supervision for at least twelve months prior to the course. In these cases, official translation is also required if the license is not written in English. White Cards are a pre requisite for the Blue Card given traffic control is often conducted around road works and construction.

For those controlling traffic away from construction or road works, a White Card is not necessary and they can attend the same course but will be issued with a Grey Card. The Grey Card allows individuals to control traffic in areas such as car parks, or non construction zones.

While this course is only recognised in NSW, there has been a recent growth in the popularity of this form of training. As the number of jobs continue to decrease both state and nationwide, many individuals are looking to improve their employability. For persons working in a construction or traffic related role, the Blue Card is an excellent means of getting ahead of the pack. Traffic control jobs are frequently sought as pay rates are substantial and the work is physically suited to a broader range of people.

Students of the blue card course must also learn to effectively use and operate a two way radio. This skill is key to the control of traffic as the role is dependent on radio communication when team members are not within immediate view. The course is conducted in one day and involves both classroom and practical training and assessment.
