Should I obtain my forklift license?

For people working in warehouse or construction roles associated with industrial production, forklift licenses are becoming increasingly common. Forklift jobs are seen as well paid and obtaining the license to operate a forklift can give a substantial edge to employees competing for work. Due to the practical nature of this course and the high risk element of the work involved, licensing cannot be obtained online. Students are required to attend a three day course (two days of training / final day WorkCover assessment), in order to obtain the skills required to safely and effectively operate a forklift. Some providers may offer the course in less time on the basis that participants may have had prior experience operating forklifts, however the significant amount of theory involved in the course, means that every bit of the two days training is required to ensure that the training is conducted sufficiently and that participants are given the necessary time to learn and be assessed by the training organisation before putting applicants forward for WorkCover assessment.

Specifically, forklift certification (TLILIC2001A) permits licensees to operate industrial trucks equipped with an elevated loading carriage and attachments. The high risk license obtained through successful completion of this course is LF class, which permits drivers to operate forklifts of all types and sizes (counter balance, high reach, container forklifts, electric or gas operated, all terrain, truck or trailer mounted, double deep etc). Students of this course will learn not only to operate the vehicle, but also to plan forklift work and conduct the necessary pre and post operational safety checks on equipment. National standards recognise the importance of this training, emphasising the classification of forklift work as high risk.

For the first two days of this course, focus will be upon the operation and application of the forklift. The third day is intended for WorkCover assessment. Following the completion of this course, students will be legally permitted to operate a forklift across all states of Australia, as the license is recognised nation wide. Following successful completion of WorkCover assessment, participants have 60 days to take their documentation to an Australia Post outlet to apply for the HRW photo card. Applications must be made within this timeframe to avoid the need for reassessment.
