Improve Your Bartending Skills
Improve your bartending skills - undertake necessary RSA, RGC courses and learn about correct food handling and preparation to further your bartending career...
Behind the glamour and glitz of the bartending industry, lies a serious side to the industry. Before embarking on your bartending career, there are mandatory courses you must do such as your RSA certificate. You may also have to complete your RCG certificate and learn about proper food handling and preparation. Read more about how you can improve your bartending skills.
Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) course: Before embarking on your bartending career in Sydney, you need to complete your Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) certificate. You will also need to complete your certificate again if the following applies to you:
-
You have lost your certificate. A copy of the RSA certificate must be kept in a register by the licensee of the bar you are employed at.
-
You have moved from another state and have an equivalent qualification. A RSA course approved by the NSW Casino, Liquor & Gaming Control Authority will need to be completed to work in the NSW liquor industry.
-
Your RSA certificate has not been done at an approved training provider. Anyone who has completed an unapproved RSA course will be required to complete the course through an approved training provider such as Infront Staffing.
The Office of Liquor, Racing and Gaming are currently reviewing refresher RSA courses. To keep your bartending skills up to date, you may want to consider updating your certificate by undertaking the RSA course at Infront Training, one of the approved training providers.
Responsible Conduct of Gambling (RCG) course: In addition to obtaining an RSA certificate, it is a requirement under NSW law, that bar staff with gaming related responsibilities will also have to complete the NSW Responsible conduct of gambling course (RCG).
A training organisation such as Infront Staffing must be approved by the Casino, Liquor & Gaming Control Authority to conduct RCG training. Hoteliers and club secretaries are now required to keep copies of RCG certificates of staff that have gaming related duties on the premises.
Most larger venues have gaming floors as well as a bar so why not expand your resume and improve your bartending skills by doing an RCG course at Infront Training? It will make you more employable in the industry as licensees are more likely to hire staff who can take on more than one role in the organisation.
Food handling and preparation: Another important part of your bartending role may including serving food from the bar bistro or restaurant so it is important to learn about food handing and preparation and build on your bartending skills.
There are certain requirements and laws that relate to the handling of food in Sydney that are regulated by the NSW Food Authority and you have an important responsibility to handle food in a hygienic, healthy and safe manner.
The provision of food is a mandatory condition for hotel and on-premises licences in NSW to reduce the risk of intoxication by patrons. Doing a course in food handling and preparation added to your bartending skills will enhance your employability in the hospitality industry and put you a step ahead of other less qualified candidates.
Once a upon a time it was good enough for a bartender to have fine-tuned bartending skills but in the competitive hospitality industry, this now means that you have to be an all-rounder in all aspects of hospitality. The more experience and training you get under your bartending belt, the more employable you will be. And remember if you’re already working in the hospitality industry, then any courses you do that are related to your role are tax deductible.
